Clinical observation on treatment of sciatica by acupuncture and massage therapy

Abstract:

Objective

To observe the clinical curative effect of the treatment of combined acupuncture and massage therapy for sciatica caused by lumbar disc disease.

Methods

Fifty patients with sciatica were selected in department of physical therapy and acupuncture of Huijun hospital, Pingliang City, Gansu Province, from July 2012 to October 2014. Acupuncture combined with massage was used for treatment in patients for 2 courses. There were 22 male and 28 female in 50 patients. The age of onset was 32~68 years old. The disease course of sciatica was from the shortest 10 days to the longest 5 to 6 years.

Results

Thirty-two cases were cured (64%), 11 were markedly effective (22%), and 7 were invalid (14%).The total effective rate was 86% (43/50).

Conclusion

Acupuncture combined with massage therapy has a good therapeutic effect on sciatica caused by lumbar disc disease.
