Abstract:

Peripheral facial paralysis is a common disease and frequently-occurring disease. The commonly treatment for this disease in modern medicine is improving local circulation, eliminating inflammation and swelling of facial nerve. But the effect is not very ideal. In the view of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), facial paralysis is mostly due to the deficiency of healthy qi, exogenous cold, and which means that “healthy qi can’t be against pathogenic qi”. Therefore, the principle therapy is to dredge the meridian and expel wind and cold. Acupuncture and moxibustion have a unique advantage in the treatment of the disease. In the light of methods of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for facial paralysis in recent years, the literature review and a summary from the simple acupuncture treatment, acupuncture combined with other treatments and other therapy of TCM were done in this study. Methods of acupuncture combined with other treatments are divided into five parts, such as acupuncture with electric acupuncture, moxibustion, bloodletting with cupping, Chinese herbs and acupuncture point injection. The methods of combined acupuncture therapy can short the treatment durision, reduce sequels in patients, but it needs doctors to make the treatment based on syndrome differentiation. At the same time consideration for the further study of acupuncture and moxibustion for facial paralysis are put forward.
