Acupuncture for treatment of simple obesity: systematic review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:

Objective

To systematically the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of simple obesity.

Methods

Searching the Chinese biomedical literature database, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and collected randomized controlled trials of acupuncture treatment on simple obesity that published from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2021.After data extraction and bias risk assessment of the included literature, the Meta-analysis was performed using Rev Man 5.3 software.

Results

A total of 13 researches meeting the criteria were obtained in this study, with a total of 1 050 subjects. Meta-analysis showed that acupuncture significantly improved body weight compared with sham acupuncture [WMD=-2, 95%CI(-3.56, -0.43), P=0.01)]、BMI[WMD=-0.87, 95%CI(-1.29, -0.45), P<0.01]、waistline[WMD=-2.68, 95%CI(-4.25, -1.12), P=0.01], with no obvious adverse reactions. Subgroup analysis showed that filiform needle and catgut embedment in acupoint could alleviate simple obesity. However, there is no clear evidence to support the efficacy of electroacupuncture and auricular acupuncture in treating simple obesity due to insufficiency of research .

Conclusion

Acupuncture may be an effective intervention for simple obesity.
