Review and quality evaluation of the RCT reports on effect of acupoint catgut embedding therapy on PCOS
Qian Zhou, Qinhui Fu, Jian Pei
    Chinese Journal of Acupuncture and Moxibustion(Electronic Edition) 2020, 09 (04): 159-164. DOI: 10.3877/cma.j.issn.2095-3240.2020.04.011
    Abstract (140) HTML (0) PDF (723 KB) (8)

Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disease. Its specific etiology and pathogenesis are still unclear, so it is clinically targeted for symptomatic treatment. Acupoint embedding as a non-pharmacological treatment of traditional Chinese medicine can improve the obesity index of patients and regulate the hormone levels in the body. To evaluate the efficacy of acupoint embedding therapy for PCOS and the quality of RCT reports, the article reviewed the clinical studies on efficacy of acupoint embedding in the treatment of PCOS in the past decade. At the same time, the quality of the relevant randomized controlled trials was evaluated by the STRICTA standard. Acupoint embedding treatment of PCOS can improve the body mass index, hormone level, ovulation cycle, blood lipid index, and the curative effect is clear. There is a lack of detailed description of the operation in acupoint embedding treatment RCT trials for PCOS. The use of acupoint embedding in the treatment of PCOS can be applied in clinical practice. At present, there are problems in the quality of RCT literature reports of acupoint embedding treatment for PCOS, such as defects in experimental design and uneven quality of reports, which affects the credibility and reference value of the research results. In order to improve the reliability and quality of acupuncture clinical randomized trials, it is recommended to strictly comply with the current national standards for acupuncture treatment and the STRICTA standards in clinical for trial design, implementation, and literature reporting.

Evaluation of the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials on acupuncture for migraine over the past five years by the CONSORT statement and STRICTA
Wenquan Mo, Jian Pei, Hui Yang
    Chinese Journal of Acupuncture and Moxibustion(Electronic Edition) 2018, 07 (01): 26-31. DOI: 10.3877/cma.j.issn.2095-3240.2018.01.009
    Abstract (25) HTML (0) PDF (716 KB) (0)
    Objective

To evaluate the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for migraine.

    Methods

Four databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, CNKI, VJIP from January 2012 to April 2017 were searched electronically, and only English and Chinese articles were included. Two reviewers independently included the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We assessed the quality of these reports according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting of Trials (CONSORT) statement and STandards for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA).

    Results

Finally 18 RCTs were included. Regarding the CONSORT statement, 15(83.33%) RCTs described the baseline demographic and clinical characteristics in each group. Only 8 (44.44%) studies mentioned how the random sequence was generated. 10(55.56%) RCTs described the concealment in detail. Only 10(55.56%) RCTs used blinding. Only 6(33.33%) RCTs reported how the sample size was calculated. According to the items in STRICTA, 8(44.44%) reported acupuncture response, and 11(61.11%) mentioned the depths of insertion. There were only 5 RCTs (27.78%) that reported the background of the acupuncture practitioners and the duration of their training.

    Conclusion

The RCTs of acupuncture for migraine meeting the criteria of the CONSORT statement and STRICTA still have room for improvement. Promoting the use of the CONSORT statement and STRICTA would help to improve the reporting quality of acupuncture related research, and hence to elucidate the scientific understanding of acupuncture.
