Abstract:

Post-stroke shoulder-hand syndrome is one of the common sequelae after stroke, with pain and inability of the upper limb and hand of the affected side, and with obvious muscle atrophy in the later period. The pathogenesis is still unclear, and according to modern medicine it is perhaps related to the dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. In traditional Chinese medicine, post-stroke shoulder-hand syndrome is categorized in “bi syndromes” and similar to what says in Miraculous Pivot “Invasion of pathogenic factors into the small intestine meridian include the following symptoms: sore throat, mandibular swelling, inability of the neck to move , bursting pain of the shoulder and breaking pain of the medial side of the upper limb". Contrasted to the unsatisfactory curative efficacy of modern medicine in the treatment of it,acupuncture-moxibustion therapy has particularly more effective treatment outcome. This paper overviews the clinical studies based on a lot of valuable experience on acupuncture treating post-stroke shoulder-hand syndrome in recent years.

Key words: Stroke, Acupuncture-moxibustion, Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
