Abstract:
Objective
To evaluate the clinical efficacy of intervention treatment with auricular acupressure in elderly patients at high risk for diabetes.
Methods
A total of 103 patients at high risk of diabetes were selected from six communities of Weihai Wendeng city. Patients were randomly divided into two groups, observation group ( n=52 ) and control group ( n=51 ). There were 27 male patients and 25 female patients in observation group, with mean age ( 55.2±6.7 ) years. The mean age of was ( 53.8±5.9 ) years, and there were 25 male patients and 26 female patients in control group. The observation group was given the intensive health education combined with auricular acupressure (pancreas, gallbladder, between screen and Ashi, sticking vaccaria seed). Patients of observation group were given the intensive health education and were asked to press auricular points 30 minutes before meals and before going to bed for 1~2 min. Patients were given the intensive health education in control group. Data of body mass index ( BMI ), waist circumference, total cholesterol ( TC ),triglyceride ( TG ), low density lipoprotein cholesterol ( LDL-C ), fasting blood glucose ( FBG ), postprandial 2 h glucose ( 2 hPG ) and glycated hemoglobin ( HbAlc ) were compared between two groups after one year treatment. SPSS13.0 statistical software was used for data analysis. The independent samples t test was used to compare the clinical efficacy in two groups. The paired t test was used for data before and after treatment.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results
There were significant differences in BMI, waist circumference, TC, TG, LDL-C, FBG, 2 hPG and HbAlc between two groups after intervention ( t=4.38, 4.98,19.18, 10.46, 6.74, 10.20, 5.18 and 22.84, P<0.05, respectively ).
Conclusion
The intervention treatment with auricular acupressure can significantly control BMI, blood glucose and lipid levels, so as to prevent and delay the occurrence of diabetes mellitus in elderly people.
